Biographical Sketch

img David A Burks was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from the Cleveland Public School system in 1975. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Cornell University and his MD degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in 1984. He completed his residency in Surgery and Urology at the University of Michigan in 1989 under Dr. Edward McGuire, a pioneer in bladder dysfunction. He was recruited to Henry Ford Hospital and started a program in voiding dysfunction and incontinence. As a Senior Staff Urologist at Henry Ford Health Systems for twenty years, he developed a nationally recognized expertise in overactive bladder and interstitial cystitis. He is currently a member of the Michigan Institute of Urology with his clinical practice based in Detroit, Dearborn and the Western Wayne county communities in Michigan.

Dr. Burks developed an interest in Interstitial Cystitis early in his career and became an investigator in the Interstitial Cystitis Data Base Research Group, a five year study sponsored by the National Institute of Health. He was Co-Principal Investigator on the 5 year Interstitial Cystitis Clinical Trials Group NIH project and Principal Investigator in the Interstitial Cystitis Clinical Research Network. He currently sits on the American Urological Association guidelines panel on interstitial cystitis. He has won numerous awards including election this year to the Consumers' Research Council of America 2010 Guide to America's Top Surgeons, and. "Best Doctors in America", 2009-2010. He lectures to physicians nationally and internationally on the subjects of interstitial cystitis, overactive bladder and incontinence.
